Here was his answer!

Sitting in the sun on the side of Jubilee Oval whilst watching the Cricket Campers play their 20-20 match isn’t my idea of a holiday. But God quickly reminded me why I was there. The batting team all but lost interest in the game when one year 5 boy asked me,
“Hey Josiah, do you know the story of Jesus controlling the waves?”
“I sure do!” I replied.
“Can you tell it to me?” He asked eagerly, with wide eyes.
I couldn’t believe the how interested the kids were. They hung off every word. And when I finished, they asked me to tell them another story. And another!

It’s this eagerness for God’s word in the context of Christian community that has kept me coming back for the last decade. And now I’ve found myself as a director of the camp!

Cricket Camp began as a dream back in 2003. Maria Buster and Andrew Moreton began the camp out in Bourke, eager to share the gospel to young men through cricket. Maria and Andrew had a strong emphasis on Christian community as a way to witness the gospel to the campers. And this emphasis continues 20 years on!

Today, the camp runs out of Alectown and we regularly get between 50-60 boys between years 5 and 9 (10-15 year olds). A growing number of children from disadvantaged homes are sponsored completely. The camp is packed with activities, from T20 games to cricket drills and academy sessions for those wanting extra coaching. There’s also wide games, narrow games, and indoor Sports World activities.

But the heart of the camp is Jesus. Each year we choose a theme: this year it’s “Pad Up: Stand Firm” based on the Armour of God in Ephesians 6. Throughout the camp, leaders share testimonies, give talks, lead discussion groups and have chats with the campers.

We read the Bible, have question times, and encourage personal time with God. Our goal aligns with Scripture Union, namely, “To make God’s good news known”.

I recently bumped into some campers a few weeks back. I remember the younger boy being full of questions last year. Their dad seemed hesitant at first, but he shook my hand and said, “They’ll be back this year.”

If you know a boy in year 5-9, or would like to sponsor a boy, please get in touch!

We value your continued support and prayers!
Josiah Clarke, Church@6

Here are some of my own (Wayne's) personal reflections on the changes we've had over the years in response to the growth that God has been bringing at DPC.

When I first came to DPC to do MTS 30 years ago there was just one Presbyterian Church, "Dubbo Presbyterian Church" and they met at 10am. They had been doing so since 1990. But I was soon to discover there had been lots of change leading up to that point. As I met people they spoke of Dubbo Presbyterian Church meeting in a hall at Dubbo High School (now Western Plains Cultural Centre), meeting in Westhaven (Wheelers Lane), and even meeting at an old building in West Dubbo.

But it wasn't too long before DPC outgrew the new building. Iin 1995 Session decided to plant 'Evening Church'. Then 4 years later in 1999, due to more growth, 'AM Church' was split into 'Early Church' and 'Morning Church.'

In 2007 'Tuesday Church began, then in 2013 'Nightchurch' was started down at the Western Plains Cultural Centre.

We had planted a new church every 5 years!

It was then that Session decided we could not sustain planting so many churches so often, there was a 'planting fatigue.' People were getting tired and the ministry staff were stretched, so we decided to expand our building to allow our existing churches to grow larger before we needed to plant again. So in 2015 we extended the building and consolidated down to 3 Churches "Church@9", "Church@11" and "Church@7"

It was then that all 3 churches stopped growing for a period. We reached a certain size and then stopped. The Session decided to put our planned 'West Dubbo ' Plant on hold while we worked out what had stopped us from growing. It turns out there was quite a transition needed to go from a smaller church, where everyone knows everyone, and everyone is involved with everything, to a larger church. We needed to deliberately change our structures, we started ministry teams, we moved our staff to be in charge of ministry 'areas' working across all the churches, we needed to think more cleary about what we were aiming for. Reach Australia were of great help and support to us in this process.

This coincided with the COVID pandemic. In my 24 years in Dubbo this was the most challenging time in terms of changes and relationships.
Since COVID, we have seen incredible growth, which we put down to the grace and generosity of God in bringing more people to hear about Jesus and wanting to join us. So in 2022 Church@10 was planted in MAGS in West Dubbo. Alongside this we started a masterplan process to see what is the maximum capacity for a building on our current location.

I was thinking we might be stable for another 5 years, but here we are, 2 years later, and Church@9 is big enough to plant again!

With growth there is always a cost. Sometimes it's a big cost, like having to leave the church family we love to start a new plant, at other times it's a smaller cost, like changing the time we meet. There will be more changes ahead. The session is looking at a growing church that will, God willing, be too big for our building at both 9 and 6 in the next few years.

Please be praying for us as we continue to seek God's wisdom on the best way forward.

And please remember the Session is not some group of disconnected leaders, we are members of Church@9, Church@10, Church@11 and Church@6. Some of the elders have been here since the original Dubbo Presbyterian Church of 1995 and, with their families, weathered many such changes. Some have joined us more recently. But we are all, together with the other members of DPC, seeking to live now for Eternity, loving each other, loving and serving Jesus, and growing followers of Jesus as we wait for his glorious return!

These are just a few of my personal reflections as we embark on yet another change together!

Wayne

It was the 3rd of July last year. I came back from a swim and my ear felt 'blocked.' I thought it would be better in a few minutes. That night it still felt blocked. I thought it would be fine by morning. Nope. Time seemed to stretch out. 4 weeks later, sitting in the doctor’s surgery, my timeframe had shifted somewhat, but I still thought my hearing would be back to normal pretty soon. Now here I am 6 months later, and rather than thinking about tomorrow, or next week, I’m wondering about next year, or what will this look like in 5 years time.

But there’s an even bigger timeframe we need to view things from. Eternity! And eternity changes everything. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 2 ‘we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.’

Viewing things from eternity means that my biggest question is not will my hearing get better, but how can I be thankful and joyful in the midst of the uncertainty of what’s happening.

Living for eternity means I can focus on how to love others now, how to serve Jesus now, how to grow more like Jesus in this trial, not put life on hold till things get better.

Viewing things from eternity means that I don’t have to worry about 5 years time, because the God of eternity has me in his hands and is working out all things for his good.

This year our focus at DPC is on living now for eternity What will that look like for you? Where have you become so swamped by what’s happening around you that you’ve lost sight of the eternal? What will it mean for you to fix your eyes on Jesus and run for the prize this year? What needs to continue in your life, what needs to stop? These are the kind of questions we want to be asking ourselves as we consider what it means to live now for eternity.

Here’s a copy of the booklet that was handed out at church last week. We hope it prompts you to consider how to better live now for eternity.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Cor 4

Eternity.pdf
